Small Courtyard Landscape Design Auckland
Small Auckland courtyard landscape design projects require thoughtful planning and creative use of space. In this project, Flourish Garden Concepts transformed a tired inner-city courtyard into a beautiful, intimate functional outdoor space.
Starting with the Foundations
When my client first contacted me, she wanted help reimagining a courtyard that had become dated and no longer reflected the style of her home. It all started with an initial garden consultation, where we discussed how the space was used and developed a concept to guide the transformation.
Although compact, the courtyard had great bones and enormous potential. The challenge was to create a garden that felt calm, modern and functional while making the most of every square metre.
Small gardens often demand the greatest attention to detail. Every material, every plant and every design decision is on display, which means there is little room for error. This recent inner-city courtyard renovation is a perfect example of how thoughtful design, quality workmanship and strong collaboration can completely transform a tired outdoor space.
One of the first priorities was addressing the existing hardscape. The old paving had reached the end of its life and was having a significant impact on the overall appearance of the courtyard. Replacing the tiles became a key part of the transformation, instantly helping to establish a fresh and contemporary feel.
Before any new materials or planting were introduced, we also ensured drainage issues were addressed. Good drainage is one of those unseen elements that can make or break a garden, so it was important to get this right from the beginning.
The raised planters were retained but refreshed with new plaster finishes, creating a cleaner and more cohesive look that tied in beautifully with the updated material palette.

A Collaborative Project
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the collaborative process. The final result was achieved through a combination of skilled tradespeople, an engaged client and careful coordination throughout the project.
Electrical upgrades were required to improve the outdoor lighting, ensuring the courtyard could be enjoyed both day and night.
Painting and finishing work refreshed the surrounding walls, with crisp white surfaces helping to maximise light and create a
sense of spaciousness.
The client was fantastic to work with throughout the process, embracing ideas while remaining actively involved in key decisions. Together we selected lightweight statement pots and carefully chose plants suited to the site’s conditions.
Creating a Tropical Feel
The planting brief was clear: create a lush, tropical-inspired atmosphere while maintaining a refined and timeless aesthetic.
Plant selection focused on year-round greenery, texture and form rather than relying heavily on seasonal colour. In a small space, restraint is often just as important as creativity. Too many plant varieties can create visual clutter, so we concentrated on a limited palette that would provide consistency and structure throughout the year.
The result is a garden that feels lush and inviting without becoming busy or overwhelming.

Designing for Small Spaces
Designing compact gardens requires a different mindset to larger landscapes.
In small spaces, every element competes for attention. Limiting the number of materials helps create visual calm and ensures the design remains timeless rather than following short-lived trends.
Attention to detail also becomes incredibly important. Because everything is visible at once, quality workmanship and thoughtful finishing touches have an even greater impact.
Functionality was another key consideration. The courtyard needed to feel open and usable while still providing interest and atmosphere. A comfortable seating area was incorporated, creating a place to relax and enjoy views of the beautiful plane trees that line the surrounding street.
We also retained an existing gate that had strong architectural character, proving that not everything needs to be replaced to achieve a fresh result. Sometimes preserving the right features helps maintain a sense of place and authenticity.
The Finished Result
The completed courtyard feels light, sophisticated and effortless. A carefully curated material palette, refreshed architectural elements, improved lighting and layered planting have transformed what was once a tired space into a modern urban retreat.
Projects like this demonstrate that successful garden design isn’t always about adding more. Often it’s about editing, simplifying and ensuring every element works together harmoniously.
Most importantly, this project highlights what can be achieved when clients, designers and tradespeople work together towards a shared vision. The end result is a courtyard that not only looks beautiful but functions beautifully too—a timeless outdoor space that will continue to evolve and be enjoyed for years to come.
Small spaces may be compact, but when designed well, they can have an impact far greater than their size suggests.
