Frequently Asked Questions About Landscape & Garden Design
The Design Process
What exactly is a landscape plan and why do I need one?
A landscape plan is a considered framework for how your outdoor space will function, feel, and evolve over time. It brings together layout, materials, planting, and key features into a cohesive design, ensuring everything works both practically and visually.
Without a clear plan, outdoor spaces can often feel disjointed or require costly changes later. A well-resolved design allows decisions to be made upfront, resulting in a more refined and enduring outcome.
The selection of materials plays an important role in this, influencing both longevity and overall quality — I’ve outlined this in more detail here.
How does the design process work?
We start with an initial onsite garden consultation so I can get to know you, your space, and what you’re hoping for. I’ll then draw up a preliminary concept that captures the big picture. From there, we fine-tune things together until it feels just right, then I’ll give you detailed plan you can hand straight to a landscaper or implement yourself.
As part of the design process, I also consider how elements like shade are integrated to ensure the space is comfortable throughout the day — something I’ve explored further here.
Can you design for small or challenging sites?
Yes – and I actually love them! Whether it’s a tiny courtyard, a sloping section, or a space that feels a bit awkward, there are always clever ways to turn it into something beautiful and practical.
Pricing
How much does a landscape design cost?
The cost of a landscape design can vary depending on the size and complexity of the space, as well as the level of detail required. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor each design to suit the property and how you’d like to use it.
A well-considered design is an investment in getting the space right from the beginning — helping to avoid costly revisions and ensuring the finished result feels cohesive and intentional. The quality of materials and finishes specified also plays a significant role in the overall outcome, which we’ve explored further here.
Do you charge for an initial consultation?
Yes, I do – $140 including GST. That first visit is all about walking around your garden together, talking through your ideas, and sharing early design possibilities. This on-site meeting sets us up well for the next steps.
I don’t know much about gardens and don’t know what I like. How do I get an idea?
That’s completely normal, and very much part of the process. Most clients come to me without a clear picture of exactly what they want, but with a sense of how they’d like to use the space.
I guide you through this by understanding your lifestyle, how you spend time at home, and what would make the outdoor area feel more usable and enjoyable. From there, we develop a design that reflects both the property and your preferences.
Often, it’s elements like warmth, lighting, or spaces for gathering that help shape the direction — for example, features such as outdoor fireplaces can significantly influence how a space is experienced, which I’ve discussed further here.
Installation and Maintenance After
How long does the design and installation take?
A design usually takes about 4–6 weeks. The build can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the level of detail and the time of year. I’ll always give you an idea up front so you know what to expect.
Do you manage the build as well as the design?
My focus is on the design process, however I also partner with trusted landscapers and contractors who can bring your plans to life. I’m happy to recommend skilled professionals to ensure the highest standard of workmanship.
Will my new garden be easy to maintain?
If you want an easy to maintain garden then yes. If you want to be active and hands on with your garden then I will design with this in mind too. It is really up to you and your lifestyle choices.
Style & Expertise
Do you specialise in a particular style of garden?
My focus is on creating timeless, elegant landscapes that reflect your personal taste and the architecture of your home. Whether contemporary, classic, or naturalistic, I tailor each design to you. Elements like lighting and structure play a key role in shaping the overall feel of a space — I’ve shared more on this approach here.
What if I don’t like the design?
That’s really unlikely — because the design is a collaboration. I take time upfront to get a clear brief, and then we have a preliminary meeting where I walk you through the concept. There’s always room for refinements at this stage, so by the time it’s finalised, it feels like your garden through and through.
