When planning garden lighting design in Auckland, subtlety is key to creating atmosphere without over-lighting outdoor spaces. As an Auckland-based landscape designer, I work closely with homeowners, builders and landscape contractors to bring thoughtfully designed gardens to life. My focus is creating outdoor spaces that are not only visually beautiful, but functional, and usable year-round.
Garden lighting design tips for Auckland gardens
There are a number of important elements that go into creating a garden or outdoor living space. Outdoor lighting is one of these elements, and it is an essential component — especially for those who want to extend the use of their gardens after dark.
Using Garden Lighting to Create Atmosphere and Visual Drama
I caught up with Jordan Stokes, Managing Director at Landscape Lighting Company, who has 20 years’ extensive experience in the outdoor lighting industry. His team and I have worked on numerous projects together, and we share a strong belief that well-designed outdoor lighting should feel considered and subtle — enhancing a garden’s structure, atmosphere and usability.

Why Outdoor Lighting Is Essential for Modern Auckland Gardens
To experience a whole new world of ambience in your garden, the key is to incorporate some form of outdoor lighting. “In Auckland, good landscape lighting isn’t about flooding a garden with light. It’s about helping people safely move through their space and enjoy outdoor living long after the sun goes down” says Jordan.
Lighting tip:
When planning garden lighting, focus on layered design rather than individual fittings. A combination of ambient, task, and feature lighting improves usability, enhances safety, and showcases planting and structure after dark. Thoughtfully placed landscape lighting adds depth and interest while allowing Auckland gardens to be enjoyed well into the evening.
Lighting is most commonly used in the garden for safety. At night, when visibility is at its lowest, lighting can assist in navigating around the garden and alerting one to potential hazards such as steps.

In addition to practical applications, lighting can also be used to add interest and drama to a garden, creating ambience and drawing attention to focal elements such as water features, sculptures and feature walls.
Some people, however, make the mistake of over-lighting their gardens and, as a result, lose the subtle definition that lighting can bring to an outdoor space. “One of the biggest mistakes I see in garden lighting is overdoing it. The best landscape lighting designs use contrast and shadow to create depth, not glare” says Jordan.
Lighting tip :
Restraint is key. Thoughtfully placed lighting that highlights selected paths, planting, or architectural elements—while allowing other areas to fall into shadow—creates depth, atmosphere, and a more refined night-time garden experience.
Choosing the Right Outdoor Lighting for Your Budget and Style
There are many different types of lighting devices and products available to illuminate your garden. Depending on the purpose and the atmosphere you want to create, anything from candles, garden torches and oil lamps to regular halogen, solar-powered and LED lights can be used.
Why Outdoor Lighting Should Be Planned from the Start
It’s advisable to consider your lighting requirements during the planning stage of your garden design and construction. Lighting should form an integral part of your garden rather than be a last-minute addition. It’s also a good idea to consult a lighting professional to ensure a successful end result.
The Rise of LED Outdoor Lighting in New Zealand Gardens
Over the years, there has been a notable change and advancement in lighting technology. The main change is the increasing use of LED (light emitting diode) lights. “Modern LED landscape lighting gives us precision. It’s energy efficient, long lasting, and allows us to design outdoor lighting that feels intentional rather than overpowering” Jordan says.
Are Solar Garden Lights Worth It in Auckland Conditions?
Another popular option is solar-powered lights. These are particularly effective in places where there is no electrical connection. Interesting lighting effects can be achieved with solar lights, but the appeal of solar lighting lies mainly in the cost savings.
Best Outdoor Lighting for Driveways, Entrances, Paths and Pools
Where security and safety are required — such as around entrances, driveways, pathways, steps and pools — you should opt for a low-glare light fitting to avoid creating unnecessary brightness. Jordan says, “For pathways, entrances, and pool areas, we focus on low-glare outdoor lighting. You want clear visibility and safety without harsh brightness”.
For plants, dramatic effects can be created using backlighting, otherwise known as silhouetting. Placing a light source behind a feature plant will define its outline, yet its detail will remain shrouded in shadow.

“Backlighting plants is one of the most effective techniques in landscape lighting. It defines shape and texture while keeping the garden feeling natural and alive at night” says Jordan.

Outdoor Lighting Advice from a Landscape Lighting Expert
I asked Jordan a series of questions about outdoor lighting — here are his responses:
Biggest mistakes homeowners make
The biggest mistake we see is over-lighting, too many fittings and too much brightness. It’s actually the shadow and contrast that create interest. The other big one is cheap fittings. Outside is brutal on gear. If you cut corners, it won’t last. We aim for installs that go 7–10 years plus, so choosing quality fittings and doing it right from the start always wins long-term.
Where professional lighting makes the most impact
Professional lighting makes the biggest impact through a layered approach, working with trees, features, entryways, entertaining areas, pathways, and transitions. We love lighting low textures on the ground, mixing uplighting with low-level lighting, and balancing up, down, and feature lights. It’s about building a proper lighting palette so the space feels designed, not just, lit.
How to create ambience without over-lighting
We use indirect light and light objects, not areas. Trees, sculptures, walls, not empty space. We push light away from living areas, hide fittings, and keep everything warm 2700K. Low-level lighting handles the practical stuff, while features create the scene. We use dimming and zones, but the key thing is, darkness creates ambience. Light just fills it.
Outdoor lighting trends right now
Every garden’s different, but right now in Auckland we’re seeing lots of river stone, stepping stone, and lava stone gardens, and they’re awesome to light. The rougher the texture, the better the light sweeps across it. Brushing light through low planting and textured ground creates heaps of interest at night. Natural gardens, layered planting, and subtle feature lighting are what people are leaning into.
Thanks again to Jordan from Landscape Lighting for sharing his knowledge.
