Frequently Asked Questions About Landscape & Garden Design
The Design Process
What exactly is a landscape plan and why do I need one?
Think of it as a roadmap for your dream outdoor living space – a master plan to implement either on your own or with the assistance of a landscape contractor. A landscape concept and planting plan is a scale drawing that shows how all the landscape elements fit together – from new features such as decks and paved areas to existing and new plants. If you’re happy with your section layout and simply want advice on what to plant and where, I also offer a planting plan on its own. A clear plan takes out the guesswork, helps you avoid costly mistakes, adds value to your property and ensures your outdoor area evolves as a cohesive, functional, and beautiful space.
How does the design process work?
We start with an initial onsite garden consultation so I can get to know you, your space, and what you’re hoping for. I’ll then draw up a preliminary concept that captures the big picture. From there, we fine-tune things together until it feels just right, then I’ll give you detailed plan you can hand straight to a landscaper or implement yourself.
Can you design for small or challenging sites?
Yes – and I actually love them! Whether it’s a tiny courtyard, a sloping section, or a space that feels a bit awkward, there are always clever ways to turn it into something beautiful and practical.
Pricing
How much does a landscape design cost?
It depends on the size and complexity of your garden – but after our first meeting, I’ll give you a clear proposal so you know exactly what’s involved. No vague ballpark figures, just honest pricing that suits your project.
Do you charge for an initial consultation?
Yes, I do – $140 including GST. That first visit is all about walking around your garden together, talking through your ideas, and sharing early design possibilities. This on-site meeting sets us up well for the next steps.
I don’t know much about gardens and don’t know what I like. How do I get an idea?
That’s totally normal – and honestly, part of the fun! You don’t need to know plant names or design styles before we start. I’ll guide you through the process by asking the right questions, showing you examples, and getting a feel for how you want to use your outdoor space. Often people discover their style as we go, and that’s where the magic happens.
Installation and Maintenance After
How long does the design and installation take?
A design usually takes about 4–6 weeks. The build can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the level of detail and the time of year. I’ll always give you an idea up front so you know what to expect.
Do you manage the build as well as the design?
My focus is on the design process, however i also partner with trusted landscapers and contractors who can bring your plans to life. I’m happy to recommend skilled professionals to ensure the highest standard of workmanship.
Will my new garden be easy to maintain?
If you want an easy to maintain garden then yes. If you want to be active and hands on with your garden then I will design with this in mind too. It is really up to you and your lifestyle choices.
Style & Expertise
Do you specialise in a particular style of garden?
My focus is on creating timeless, elegant landscapes that reflect your personal taste and the architecture of your home. Whether contemporary, classic, or naturalistic, I tailor each design to you.
What if I don’t like the design?
That’s really unlikely — because the design is a collaboration. I take time upfront to get a clear brief, and then we have a preliminary meeting where I walk you through the concept. There’s always room for refinements at this stage, so by the time it’s finalised, it feels like your garden through and through.
